Part 2: 5 Richard Branson quotes to inspire social entrepreneurs

In our last article we featured 5 inspirational Richard Branson quotes. Hold on to your hats, we have 5 more!

Quote 1: “If you’re hurt, lick your wounds and get up again. If you’ve given it your absolute best, it’s time to move forward.”

No matter how much you love your business or how much you want to change the world with your business, it’s not all smooth sailing, as you likely know!

Business has its ups and downs.

It’s okay to falter, it’s okay to fall and it’s even okay to fail.

The key is to get back up, armed with specific information about why you fell in the first place. Remember, it’s only a mistake if you haven’t learnt anything from it.

Try again or move on, and keep this additional Richard Branson quote in mind: “Every person, and especially every entrepreneur, should embrace failure with open arms. It is only through failure that we learn. Many of the world’s finest minds have learned this the hard way.”

Quote 2: “Engage your emotions at work. Your instincts and emotions are there to help you.”

We believe it’s important to make an informed decision, but no matter how much preparation you’ve done, always go with your gut feeling. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Anytime we’ve ignored our gut feeling, we’ve paid the price in one way or another. Maybe you’ve found this as well?

Quote 3: “Entrepreneurial business favours the open mind. It favours people whose optimism drives them to prepare for many possible futures, pretty much purely for the joy of doing so.” richard-branson-quote-32

As ethical business owners, we believe we have a healthy balance of realism and optimism. We are realistic enough to know the world needs our ethical business, and optimistic enough to know we can make a difference.

We prepare for many possible futures because we are trying to change the course of the one we’re heading toward. We want our business to create a better, greater world. This is one of the most addictive forms of joy!

Quote 4: “Listen. Take the best. Leave the rest.”

Whether you’re starting out in business or are an established business owner, you’re going to receive a lot of advice. We agree with Richard Branson here. Listen to everything with an open mind, but filter what isn’t relevant.

For example, there may be well-intentioned people who say your business can’t make a difference, or that you should work with different types of customers, or sell different types of products. You know your business better than anyone else. Listen to the advice that makes sense, even if you don’t agree with it – and filter the rest.

Quote 5: “When you’re first thinking through an idea, it’s important not to get bogged down in complexity. Thinking simply and clearly is hard to do.”

This is true in relation to big overall ideas, right down to very small ones. If an idea is starting to get complex and confusing, bring it back to basics. Start from the beginning, and ask yourself, ‘What am I trying to achieve?’ In other words, start with your why.
